The recovery effort is continuing following a midair collision between an American Airlines regional jet and a military helicopter, with flight-data and voice recorders having been recovered. The plane was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, and the helicopter had three people on board. No survivors were found in the search-and-rescue operation.
Rescue crews have recovered 27 bodies from the plane and one from the helicopter. The deaths of all 67 on both aircraft make the crash the deadliest aviation disaster on U.S. soil in 23 years.
Among the Bombardier jet’s passengers were U.S. figure skaters, coaches and relatives returning from a training camp. Russian media said three former world champions were on board.
President Trump blamed diversity programs for the crash, a claim swiftly rebuked by former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. GOP lawmakers warned against jumping to conclusions.
The paths of the two aircraft took them along the Potomac River where they collided just before 9 p.m. Wednesday. It is one of the most congested airspaces in the U.S.
A day before the fatal collision, another plane aborted its first landing to avoid a helicopter in its way.
