Grammys: Kendrick Lamar Dedicates Record of the Year Win for “Not Like Us” to L.A.

One of the top awards of the night, record of the year, has been awarded to Kendrick Lamar for “Not Like Us” during the 2025 Grammy Awards.

After being presented the award by Miley Cyrus, who quipped that she may just say Beyoncé’s name instead, she eventually revealed that Lamar won the award. Once he made his way up to the stage to accept the golden gramophone trophy, Lamar said he’s “gonna dedicate this one [award] to the city” of Los Angeles.

“Compton, Watts, Long Beach, Inglewood, Hollywood, out to the Valley, Pacoima, IE, San Bernardino, all that,” he says. “You know, this is my neck of the woods that held me down … since I was in the studio scrapping to write the best raps and all that, in order to do records like these.”

Lamar continues, “So I can’t give enough thanks, you know, to these places that I rolled around since high school. And most importantly, the people and the families out in the Palisades and Altadena. This is a true testament that we can continue to restore this city. And yeah, we gonna keep rocking.”

The record of the year category awards the best overall recording of a single song, recognizing the performance and production of the track.

Lamar beat out The Beatles for “Now And Then,” Beyoncé for “Texas Hold ‘Em,” Sabrina Carpenter for “Espresso,” Charli XCX for “360,” Billie Eilish for “Birds of a Feather,” Chappell Roan for “Good Luck, Babe!” and Taylor Swift featuring Post Malone for “Fortnight.”

“Not Like Us,” initially one of several diss tracks Lamar released against Drake amid their ongoing feud, quickly became an international and cultural anthem, reaching the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song is also at the center of a defamation suit from Drake against Universal Music Group, the parent record label he and Lamar are both signed to.

The 2025 Grammy Awards, hosted by Trevor Noah, aired live on Sunday from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Find the full list of winners here and check out all the red carpet arrivals here.
