Lee began his visit by touring damage, then spoke to the media about what he saw. The first question he got, from WVLT’s Sam Luther, asked how it felt seeing the destruction.
“It’s heartbreaking but also heartening to see how friends and neighbors have been coming out to serve,” he said. “This is a remarkable place and a remarkable people. The people here are inspiring.”
The governor also spoke on state efforts to help those who were affected.
“The first thing that happens with TEMA is they do assessments, and that’s already begun,” Lee said. “These are being coordinated by a lot of people.”
Another directive for the head of Tennessee: letting people know they are being listened to.
“You see these folks and you see what they are facing today,” Lee said. “We’re here to encourage them. Part of it is ensuring them that they are seen, they are heard.”
For those interested in volunteering time or donations, the governor asked that they reach out to the state, which will then get them in contact with local authorities.
“Start with TEMA. Reach out to TEMA, who can connect you to local agencies,” he said. “They’ll be able to direct you with how you can help.”
