Metro Detroit winter storm: How much snow to expect, timeline breakdown

4Warn Weather – How much snow are we going to get? I’ve heard this question multiple times today. My answer is always the same: it depends on where you live.

Up in the Thumb? You’re going to get clobbered by at least 6 to 7 inches. Down in Monroe? A couple of inches with a glazing of ice. If you live somewhere in between, take a look at this map.

Snow total forecast.

Winter Storm Timing

Now let’s talk about the timing. Between 1 PM and 5 PM, snow showers will move in. From 5 PM to 11 PM, snow will continue to intensify and accumulate, creating slippery road conditions. The heaviest snow in many areas will occur while most of you are sleeping, between 11 PM and 3 AM.

There will still be some snow showers during the morning commute on Thursday from 3 AM to 9 AM. Later in the morning on Thursday, the snow will come to an end with just a few flurries left over.

A Winter Weather Advisory will go into effect from 1 PM Wednesday to 7 AM Thursday for the western and southern counties, with 3-5 inches of snow expected, causing slippery roads and difficult travel.

There might also be a glazing of ice for Lenawee, Monroe, and parts of Wayne County, which could reduce snow totals slightly. The best chance for the wintry mix will be between 7 PM and 3 AM.

Livingston, Oakland, and Macomb counties will experience a mainly all-snow event with higher totals of 5-7 inches.

Snowfall rates of .75 inches an hour will be possible Wednesday night, causing a significant reduction in visibility and dangerous driving conditions.

As of now, these counties and those up into the Thumb are under a Winter Storm Watch, which will likely be upgraded to a warning or advisory later tonight or tomorrow morning.
