ESPN’s Dan Graziano has weighed in on who he feels each of the NFL teams searching for 2025 leadership will choose. With six current openings, the league will once again shuffle over 20% of the head coaching positions in one offseason, with the New England Patriots already hiring Mike Vrabel. It’s a game of musical chairs a bit, with Cowboys Wire identifying over 20 solid names for the Dallas Cowboys to consider.
Graziano pulled a name that was included, in identifying a young coach who hasn’t spent much time in the ranks since his playing days, but is linked to the club and has been interviewed for head coaching positions in the past. Kellen Moore, former Dallas offensive coordinator for four years, is Graziano’s pick.
My prediction for the next Cowboys coach: Kellen Moore, current Eagles offensive coordinator
The Cowboys are obviously still extremely early in their process, and we have no idea how extensive their interview list will be once they get rolling. But Moore — who played for the Cowboys from 2015 to 2017 (including two years as Dak Prescott’s backup quarterback), then spent a year as the team’s quarterbacks coach and then four more as the offensive coordinator — has an obvious connection to the organization and its current QB. He has interviewed for head coach jobs in recent years and is on some teams’ interview lists in this cycle, as well.
The Cowboys’ offense averaged 18.9 points per game this season, 25th in the NFL. Moore’s offense in Philadelphia was sixth at 26.7 points per game.
Moore was jettisoned from the Cowboys organization when Mike McCarthy decided he was going to call plays for Dallas after Moore handled the duty the first three seasons of McCarthy’s tenure. A holdover from the Jason Garrett era, Moore was seemingly forced on McCarthy, who tried to morph Moore’s Air Coryell system with his own West Coast proclivities to form the Texas Coast offense.
It worked well, but McCarthy wanted the duties back, leading to Moore heading to the Los Angeles Chargers to coach for Brandon Staley. Staley was fired after 2023 and Moore landed with division rival Philadelphia, incorporating Saquon Barkley into an offense led by dual-threat QB Jalen Hurts.
