Famed Grammy nominee dies: ‘anthems of female empowerment’

MEXICO CITY — Famed Mexican singer Paquita la del Barrio died early Monday. She was 77.

The artist, whose real name was Francisca Viveros Barradas, died at her home in Veracruz, according to a post from her official Instagram account.

“With deep pain and sadness we confirm the sensitive passing of our beloved ‘Paquita la del Barrio’ … ,” the statement said. “She was a unique and unrepeatable artist who will leave an indelible mark in the hearts of all of us who knew her and enjoyed her music.”

Paquita la del Barrio — which translates informally to Paquita from the block — became famous in Mexico in the 1980s for being a feminist and sharing her songs about heartbreak.

According to NPR, she was especially famous for how she wrote about the men who broke her heart.

“In one of her biggest hits, ‘Rata de dos patas,’ she famously compared an ex-lover to a two-legged rat, a cursed leech and a poisonous snake,” NPR wrote.

A two-time Grammy and Latin Grammy nominee, Paquita la del Barrio received the Billboard Latin Music Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2021.

Mexico City’s Department of Culture released a statement celebrating her.

“(She) left an indelible mark with her unmistakable voice and unique style, (her music) transcended generations and became anthems of female empowerment and social criticism,” the statement shared on X said.

Tributes for the iconic singer were shared on social media.

“RIP Paquita la del Barrio, the feminist icon from Mexico who sang what others were afraid to say,” wrote Apple Music on the social platform X.
