Jack Hoffman passes away after battle with brain cancer

ATKINSON, Neb. (KOLN) – Jack Hoffman, who captured the hearts of Husker fans and the nation, has passed away after a long battle with brain cancer at the age of 19.

Immanuel Lutheran Church in Atkinson shared the news Wednesday.

“God has summoned our brother Jack Hoffman into eternal life in the glories of heaven. Blessed be his memory among us.”

The Team Jack Foundation, co-founded by his family, said Hoffman died early Wednesday morning. Hoffman was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2011 at just five years old.

In December, his mom shared that tests revealed what they feared most — multiple new tumors.

A freshman at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, Hoffman recently completed his first semester as a political science major. The university noted he made the dean’s list and was a valued member of the Loper community.

“Jack’s connection to the UNK community, even in his short time here, was meaningful. His impact on our campus and in the broader community will not be forgotten.”

Hoffman gained widespread recognition during the 2013 Nebraska Spring Game when, at age 7, he ran a 69-yard touchdown in front of more than 60,000 fans. The viral moment brought attention to pediatric brain cancer and the work of the Team Jack Foundation, which raises funds for research and treatment.

His father, Andy Hoffman, passed away in 2021 after being diagnosed with glioblastoma.

Funeral services for Jack Hoffman will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Atkinson Community Center. Visitation is scheduled for Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church.
