Michigan native Devin Booker on Lions’ postseason: ‘That’s the one we have been waiting on’

Detroit — Devin Booker’s top priority on Saturday will be getting his Phoenix Suns a win over the Detroit Pistons.

The Suns are 20-20 ahead of their matchup against the Pistons at Little Caesars Arena, a far cry from the championship expectations they had coming into the season.

Regardless of the outcome against the Pistons, Booker confirmed to The Detroit News that he plans to attend the Detroit Lions‘ Divisional Round game against the Washington Commanders at Ford Field. As a Grand Rapids native and lifelong fan of the Lions, Booker hopes for a championship.

“We’ve seen success in all of the other franchises, but that’s the one we have been waiting on,” Booker told The Detroit News before Saturday’s game. “There is a culture being built that matches this city. It has been a fun team to rally behind.”

When the Lions-Commanders game time was announced as 8 p.m. on Saturday, the Pistons’ game was moved up and hour to 4 p.m. That allowed a window for Booker, a Lions fan, and teammate Kevin Durant, a Maryland native and Commanders fan, to make it to the game less than a mile away at Ford Field.

The two indicated that they might enter a friendly wager on their favorite teams.

With a 15-2 record, the Lions had their most successful season in franchise history. They earned the No. 1 seed for the playoffs and a first-round bye. For the second consecutive year, they are favored to advance to the NFC Championship game.

Quarterback Jared Goff led the Lions’ high-powered offense by throwing for 4,629 yards and 37 touchdowns. All-Pro wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown notched his fourth consecutive season of 1,000 receiving yards, finishing with 1,263 yards on 115 catches and 17 touchdowns.

“It’s important not just for the city but for kids who grew up on the west side of the state,” Booker said. “Loving and rooting for my team.”
