Trump Promises Shock and Awe on His First Day in Office

Donald Trump’s time has arrived and the world is bracing for a burst of activity on his first day in office. At a rally on the eve of his inauguration, the president-elect promised to sign close to 100 executive orders within hours of taking power. They will include the declaration of a national energy emergency to unleash US production and reverse his predecessor’s actions to combat climate change, according to people familiar.

As for the rest of the agenda, everyone is preparing the best they can, including billionaires shuttling to Mar-a-Lago, Washington lobbyists building links with Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, Mexico lining up thousands of lawyers to deal with deportations and Canada leadership hopefuls campaigning on their ability to battle Trump. On global markets, investors are readying for the real test of the post-election euphoria that propelled stocks, the US dollar and bitcoin.

TikTok’s future will certainly be high among Trump’s priorities from the get-go. He pledged on Sunday to delay enforcement of the law that threatened to ban the short-video service. But it’s not clear that the app’s Chinese parent company has satisfied the requirements for extending the deadline to find a possible buyer and avoid a permanent shutdown. While Trump gained praise from some TikTok users for the reprieve, he may face long-time skeptics in his own Republican Party about what they see as the app’s ongoing threat. To be sure, competitors are lining up: Instagram announced a new video editing app and X touted the launch of a dedicated video tab on mobile.
