The Night Agent

It’s been well over a year at this point, but one of Netflix’s most popular shows, though you may not know it, is about to return. That would be The Night Agent, back for season 2.
The release date is Thursday, January 23, 2025, just 48 hours from the time I’m writing this. Netflix has been promoting it with everything from new trailers to absurd stunts like having star Gabriel Basso parachute onto the field during a Netflix-bought football game.
I am not exactly sure how it achieved this feat, but season 1 of The Night Agent has ended up as the #7 most-watched English language season of a show in the service’s history, just below Bridgerton season 3 and Fool Me Once. It’s even above big hits like the first three seasons of Stranger Things.
Review are just okay for The Night Agent, a 74% from critics and a 78% from fans. Solid, but nothing crazy. But the series is intensely “watchable,” and it really does appeal to all ages, from potentially teens to some of the service’s older customers who are into spy thrillers. I know that Netflix is ecstatic with the series’ performance here as they try to search for their own answer to Amazon Prime Video’s extremely popular Reacher, and at this point, yes, it seems likely that The Night Agent has outperformed it, just through Netflix’s reach alone.
The Night Agent season 2

Here’s the synopsis for season 2 of The Night Agent, which has now crafted an original story since there was only one book that was already adapted for season 1:
“Based on the novel by Matthew Quirk, The Night Agent is a sophisticated, character-based, action-thriller centering on a low level FBI Agent, Peter Sutherland, whose efforts to save The President in Season 1 earn him an opportunity to become a Night Agent in Season 2. But working in the secretive organization of Night Action will propel Peter into a world where danger is everywhere and trust is in short supply.”
If you want further evidence that Netflix is extremely confident in the success of The Night Agent season 2, they have already renewed it for season 3, which happened a month before season 2 is now airing. Here’s what creator Shawn Ryan told fans:
“We’re so excited that our fans will get to watch Season 2 of The Night Agent in early 2025, and we’ve been hard at work writing Season 3 to deliver more breathless Peter Sutherland Night Action adventures to our rabid audience.”
Even though this is now transitioning to all-original stories, it seems likely this is a show Netflix will continue to invest in for a long time, meaning fans don’t have to worry about cliffhanger cancelation like they do many other series. See you Thursday to find out how it goes.
