Warning: The Night Agent season 1 spoilers ahead!

In the fictional universe of The Night Agent, there’s a phone in The White House basement that never rings — until one day it does. The call sets low-level FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) off on a wild goose chase to find a dangerous government mole and stop an assassination attempt before it’s too late.

After Peter and tech entrepreneur Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan) slowly uncover the conspiracy to take out President Michelle Travers (Kari Matchett) and expose the high-level official who covered it up, season 1 ended with quite a few loose ends. Only Vice President Ashley Redfield (Christopher Shyer) and White House Chief of Staff Diane Farr (Hong Chau) were brought to justice for their roles in the assassination attempt while their shady co-conspirator Gordon Wick (Ben Cotton) was still on the run.

But the biggest question mark is Peter’s new role as a Night Agent and what it means for his budding romance with Rose. Buchanan told TV Insider in January 2025 that the characters’ relationship status is still very much up in the air in season 2, which premiered on Netflix on Jan. 23.

“She feels like he’s not the same person, but I think deep down she knows he’s still in there,” the actress said. “He’s just so caught up with the job, and that’s all he can see and that’s all he’s focused on.”

So how did The Night Agent season 1 end? Here’s everything to know about the assassination attempt against President Travers and what’s in store for Peter and Rose in season 2.

In the season 1 finale of The Night Agent, Peter and Rose jump into action to stop Vice President Redfield and Wick’s plot to assassinate President Travers at Camp David.

The scope was expanded to include her after their original plan to kill Omar Zadar (Adam Tsekhman), a foreign political figure with a controversial past, was thwarted by Peter. Though Farr helped the two co-conspirators cover up the attempt on Zadar, she was cut out of their new plans to try to kill him a second time — along with the president.

Thankfully, Peter and Rose make it to Camp David just in time to stop President Travers from getting on Marine One, which is rigged to explode on lift-off. Everyone survives, and the conspiracy is revealed. The only downside is that Wick got away by sneaking onto his plane before the explosion.

Farr is shot during all the commotion at Camp David, but Rose helps her survive so that she can publicly clear Peter’s name.

While her future is unclear, showrunner Shawn Ryan told Tudum in 2023 that he doesn’t think she’ll be able to avoid whatever punishment comes her way.

“We can safely assume that Diane Farr has a very difficult criminal trial in her future after probably a difficult hospital stay,” he said. “Her life is about to get decidedly worse.”

After saving her from assassination, President Travers promotes Peter to the role of Night Agent. But because the job will include a lot of cross-continental travel — along with fighting bad guys and taking down national security threats — his romantic future with Rose is uncertain.

Ryan told TV Insider that at the beginning of season 2, Peter and Rose are living separate lives and haven’t talked in months. Though she’s trying her best to adjust to new her role as a lead programmer of an advertising company, a mysterious call from Peter pulls Rose right back into all the chaos.

Though Buchanan maintains that feelings between the two characters are “definitely there,” Peter’s emotional unavailability and assumed responsibility for Rose’s safety could make their dynamic in season 2 difficult.

Throughout season 1 of The Night Agent, viewers learn that Peter Sutherland Sr. (Sebastien Roberts) was an FBI agent accused of treason who died before he was convicted. Peter asks President Travers for the truth about who his father was, and she shows him Peter Sr.’s taped confession admitting to feeding government secrets to a foreign agent in exchange for money.

However, Peter’s dad didn’t die in a car accident as he and the public had been led to believe. Prior to his death, Peter Sr. agreed to be a double agent for The White House to redeem himself and was killed while undercover.

The second season of The Night Agent shows Peter on the other end of the line for that ominous White House basement phone. Only now, the mole isn’t hiding within the walls of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue but is embedded in the Night Action program itself.

Though it’s hard to trust anyone under the circumstances, Peter will have to rely on old pals like Rose and new allies like Night Action veterans Alice (Brittany Snow) and Catherine (Amanda Warren) to unravel this new conspiracy and make it out alive.

Ryan also teased to TV Insider that a reunion between Peter and Rose will happen in season 2 after she gets “a mysterious phone call that makes her concerned for his safety.”

Both seasons of The Night Agent are available to stream on Netflix
