SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — A one-two punch of winter weather is about to arrive in the form of arctic air for all and significant lake snow for some across Central New York. Get all the latest details below…
After a mild start to the weekend with highs in the 30s to around 40 on Saturday, temperatures will only reach the low to mid 20s at best on Sunday.
The downward trend in temperature continues over the next few days with highs only in the teens for Monday, Tuesday, and even Wednesday. Nighttime lows will be in the single digits above and, for some, below zero. Combine the cold temperatures with a gusty breeze, and wind chills will be subzero at times.
Be sure you have your heaviest winter gear ready and limit the time you and your pets spend outdoors.
Lake effect snow showers will develop across the area during the day on Monday. Even Syracuse is likely to see some snow around late in the morning through the afternoon.
Lake snow will be on the move north as winds shift more westerly late in the day into Monday night. This puts the heaviest snow north of Syracuse, east of Lake Ontario.
Steady, heavy lake snow will remain well north of Syracuse between Watertown and the Tug Hill Plateau right through Tuesday and even much of Wednesday.
Light snow accumulations can be expected during the day Monday for most of CNY, including Syracuse, on the order of a trace to an inch or two.
In areas where a Winter Storm Watch is in place east of Lake Ontario, we will likely again be measuring some snow totals in feet as opposed to just inches by the middle of the week.
