Ariana Grande, Kieran Culkin and Demi Moore Among First-Time Oscar Nominees in Acting Categories

The 2025 Oscar nominations have been revealed, and there are 13 first-time nominees, including Ariana Grande, Kieran Culkin, Demi Moore, Zoe Saldaña, Sebastian Stan and Karla Sofía Gascón. 

Emilia Pérez‘s Saldaña landed a nod for best supporting actress for her portrayal of Rita Mora Castro, and Gascón received a nom for best actress for her title role in Emilia Pérez. Gascón is not only a first-time Oscar nominee but also the first openly transgender acting nominee. The Jacques Audiard-led film led the Oscar nominations with a total of 13 nods. 

Stan scored his first Oscar nom for best actor for his portrayal of President Donald Trump for The Apprentice, as well as his co-star Jeremy Strong for best supporting actor for his role of Roy Cohn.

Fresh off her first Golden Globe win, Demi Moore is nominated for best actress in a leading role for her role of Elisabeth Sparkle in Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance. The film earned a total of five Oscar nominations

Four out of five of the nominations for best supporting actress were also first-time nominees. Alongside Saldaña, Grande earned a nomination for her role of Glinda in Universal’s live-action Wicked, which also received nine other nominations. In the same category, Isabella Rossellini garnered a nom for her role of Sister Agnes in Conclave, and Monica Barbaro earned a nod for her portrayal of Joan Baez in A Complete Unknown, directed by James Mangold.

The best supporting actor category saw an equal number of first-time nominees with Kieran Culkin securing his first Oscar nomination for his role of Benji Kaplan in A Real Pain, as well as Guy Pearce for his role of Harrison Lee Van Buren Sr. in The Brutalist. In the same category, Strong earned a nom for playing Roy Cohn in The Apprentice, and Yura Borisov was nominated for Anora

Mikey Madison and Borisov both earned first-time Oscar nominations for Anora. Madison is nominated for best leading actress for her role of Ani, and Borisov is nominated for best supporting actor for his character Igor. Borisov made history with his nomination as the first Russian actor to earn an Oscar nod since 1977. Directed by Sean Baker, Anora receive a total of six nominations. 

Fernanda Torres followed in her mother, Fernanda Montenegro’s, footsteps becoming the the second Brazilian to be nominated in the best actress category for her role as Eunice Paiva in I’m Still Here. The Walter Salles-led movie received two other nods.

The 97th Academy Awards, hosted by Conan O’Brien, will air live on ABC at 4 p.m. PT / 7 p.m. ET on Sunday, March 2, from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood.
