Did Elon Musk Nazi salute? 5 weirdest moments of Trump’s inauguration | Opinion

Donald Trump took the oath of office on Monday, Jan. 20, becoming the 47th President of the United States, eight years after becoming the 45th.

That in itself is kind of weird, or at least unique — the only other president to serve non-consecutive terms was Grover Cleveland. Of course, to hear Trump tell it, he should have been the 46th president, as well. He’s still peddling the lie that the 2020 election was stolen from him. It wasn’t.

He said a lot of things on Monday. He gave a dark formal inauguration speech, bemoaning an almost dystopian-sounding America that evidently only he sees, and only he can save.

Again, weird, sure. But for Trump? Par for the course.

There were, however, some truly unhinged things that happened on Monday. These were the five weirdest.

Elon Musk gave what looked like a Nazi salute. Twice

Musk, the world’s richest person, was instrumental in getting Trump elected and has had his ear ever since. It was no surprise he had a great seat for the inauguration, which was moved to the U.S. Capitol Rotunda because of freezing temperatures. It was also no surprise that Musk was a speaker at a rally at Capital One Arena in Washington after the inauguration.

That Musk gave what clearly looked like a Nazi salute not once but twice while speaking? That was a surprise. After thanking the crowd for electing Trump, as the New York Times put it, “The billionaire then grunted and placed his hand to his heart before extending his arm out above his head with his palm facing down. After he turned around, he repeated the motion to those behind him.”

The reaction was mixed along the lines you’d think, although the Anti-Defamation League issued a statement on X saying, “It seems that @elonmusk made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute, but again, we appreciate that people are on edge. In this moment, all sides should give one another a bit of grace, perhaps even the benefit of the doubt, and take a breath.”

Trump turned official business into a performance

Trump made his way to the Capital One Arena rally eventually and gave his second grievance-filled speech of the day (the first was when he met with supporters after the swearing-in). Then he signed a few executive orders at a desk set up on the stage for that purpose, including one immediately withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris climate agreement. (He did the same thing in 2017.)

“Campaign theater meets political promises,” Jeff Zeleny said on CNN, noting that after he was done signing the orders he tossed one of the pens into the adoring crowd, like he was the late Neil Peart tossing a drumstick into the audience at a Rush concert. His fans cheered like it, too.

Fox News is all in on Trump

Maybe it’s because so many of the network’s contributors are cabinet nominees. Maybe it’s the return of a conservative who is good for ratings. Maybe they just like the guy. Whatever the case, Fox News seemed giddy about Trump returning to power. There was palpable excitement on the network before the ceremony.

Afterward, Dana Perino sounded like she lived in Trump’s post-apocalyptic America. “I feel that he was being a pragmatic optimist, saying that we will get there and we will do all of these things but it’s going to take us a minute because there are things that are so bad in our country right now,” she said after his speech. “I think he showed he is going to do for his voters what he said he was going to do. It is undeniable.”

Kinda weird, if you heard the speech. But nothing compared to Bill Hemmer’s fanboy reaction to Trump at the Capital One Arena, reported by the New York Times: “Enter Donald Trump, who has the energy sometimes of 100 men,” Hemmer said. “Donald Trump gets more done before noon than most of us do in an entire week.”

The world’s richest people had front-row seats

Maybe it wasn’t weird that Musk, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg and other tech-bro types were seated on the main stage for the inauguration. Either the men or their companies each donated at least $1 million to the inauguration and have given every indication of bending over backward to appease Trump. That they had better seats than Trump’s cabinet picks was definitely weird.

What’s weirder still, and many of the network pundits talked about it, was these aren’t just wealthy donors. Through their chokehold on social media, they control the flow of information and shape the accuracy of what appears on their platforms. And they have largely walked away from that responsibility.

Joe Biden in his farewell speech warned of a coming oligarchy. Gee, wonder what he meant.

Hillary Clinton has a sense of humor. Who knew?

If you’re looking for weird moments in Trump’s speech, this was one of them: “A short time from now, we will be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and we will be restoring the name of a great president, William McKinley, to Mount McKinley, where it should be and where it belongs.”

Not the most pressing issue, though Trump made everything he talked about sound like the most important thing in the world.

Hillary Clinton’s reaction? She laughed out loud. This, truly, was the reaction Trump’s statement deserved. That she was the only one who laughed is what’s really weird.
