What a way to mark your return from injury. Alphonso Davies has been out injured since the 3-0 debacle against Feyenoord Rotterdam in the Champions League and returned to find Bayern in another tough spot in Europe’s premier competition. But this time, he would be on the pitch to help his team. Down 1-0 to Celtic and heading to extra time, the Canadian superstar reacted fastest to a rebound in the box to somehow bundle it home in the 94th minute.
Calamity ensued, with the Bavarian players and fans celebrating the incredible late winner and progression to the Round of 16 of the Champions League. But the team eventually had to sober up and explain why the match against the Scottish champions, seen by many as an easy tie for the Bavarians, turned out to be so difficult. The goal scorer himself, Davies, had his say on the game:
“It’s the Champions League; we’re playing against a good Celtic team,” Davies readily said, via FCBayern.com. “We knew they would come here with high intensity, and we know we had to match that intensity, which we did. It’s not easy to play so many games, but all in all we defended well. We had a momentary lapse at the back but on the whole we played well. We didn’t give away many chances. In the end, we’re just happy be through to the next round.”
In the end, that is what matters the most. But not far behind the progress in importance was the successful return of Bayern’s superstar left-back. And that, one has to say, went quite well.
