‘Impactful’ storm hits Upstate NY: When to expect snow, ice, bitter cold, high winds (maps)

Syracuse, N.Y. — A major winter storm will bear down on Upstate New York this weekend, bringing a potentially dangerous combination of snow, freezing rain and ice through Sunday night.

And that’s just the beginning: The effects of the storm will continue into early next week, with high winds, brutal wind chills and the potential for heavy lake effect snow through Tuesday. Roads could get treacherous, and the combination of ice and winds could cause scattered power outages.

“An impactful storm system will lumber its way from the southern plains to directly over us by daybreak Sunday,” the National Weather Service said.

The weather service has issued a variety of weather alerts, including a winter storm warning for the North Country and Adirondacks and a high wind watch from the Finger Lakes to the Vermont border.

The impacts from the storm start today, with light to moderate snow falling across Upstate starting this morning. Tonight, as temperatures warm, sleet and ice could mix in. The bitter cold and high winds move in Sunday night.

Here’s a breakdown of what to expect:

Snow. Light snow starts in Western New York this morning and gets more intense as it moves east. Western New York is likely to get a few inches, with Central New York in the 4- to 6-inch range today. Tug Hill could get more as west winds push lake effect snow from Lake Ontario.

Freezing rain/ice. Temperatures will climb today and into Sunday morning, turning snow to freezing rain and possibly just rain in some areas.

That could cause accumulations of ice on roads, sidewalks and trees. A quarter-inch or more of ice is possible from Madison County through the Southern Tier and Catskills. Syracuse could see slightly less than that, but still enough to cause dangerously slippery conditions.

There could be scattered power outages from the weight of ice on trees and wires, the weather service said.

In Central New York, the freezing rain is expected to turn into just rain by late Sunday morning.

Bitter cold/winds. As the storm system pulls away Sunday, it will drag in some of the coldest air we’ve seen so far this winter. Temperatures on Sunday plunge from the high 30s in mid-afternoon to the teens by early Monday. At the same time, high winds pick up, with gusts up to 50 mph beginning late Sunday.

It won’t get warmer than 20 degrees on Monday, with strong wind gusts continuing to barrel across Upstate. Wind chills could drop below zero Monday and Tuesday mornings, and will remain in the single digits during the day.

Lake effect snow. All of that wind and cold air blowing across the Great Lakes is likely to produce another round of intense lake effect snow, especially along and north of the Thruway.

The weather service is warning that “potentially significant lake effect snow is possible again Sunday night through Tuesday night across the I-90 corridor and north.”
