Next Monday, the United States Postal Service, banks and NYC Public Schools will all be closed for the holiday.

Alternate side parking rules will also be suspended on Monday, meaning drivers can disregard parking signs posted for street cleaning. Parking meters will still be in effect and need to be paid.

President Ronald Reagan signed a bill to create a federal holiday for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1983, but it still took years for it to be recognized in all 50 states, according to the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
