Josh Allen vs. Lamar Jackson: Stats, records broken, how MVP voting works

The Josh Allen versus Lamar Jackson showdown is being labeled the best divisional round game of the NFL playoffs and will decide if the Buffalo Bills or Baltimore Ravens advance to the AFC championship game.

It won’t help determine who wins the NFL MVP.

The MVP vote has already taken place but the results won’t be revealed until the NFL Honors show at 9 p.m. on Feb. 6.

The AP NFL MVP award is voted on by 50 media members. Individual votes are not disclosed to the public.

When is the NFL MVP voting?

The results are already in. The MVP votes are collected at the end of the regular season and the award doesn’t take the playoffs into consideration. Allen and Jackson’s performances in their divisional round game or throughout the postseason will have no bearing on the MVP voting.

How are MVP votes counted?

Voters are allowed to put up to give players on their ballots. Here’s how the votes are weighted:

  • First place: 10 points
  • Second place: 5 points
  • Third place: 3 points
  • Fourth place: 2 points
  • Fifth place: 1 point

This is the third season with the weighted voting system. Prior to that, each voter cast one first-place vote.

Have their been co-MVPs before?

Yes, there have been to ties, resulting in co-MVP award recipients.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre and Detroit Lions running back Barry Sanders were co-MVPs in 1993. Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair and Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning shared the award in 2003.
