Manchester City vs Real Madrid live updates: Haaland goal gives hosts Champions League first-leg lead

45+3′ Manchester City 1-0 Real Madrid

Ooh, close.

Nice play from Real, Vini gets to the byline and lays it back, a deft touch from Camavinga into fellow Frenchman Kylian Mbappe’s path, and the former PSG superstar shoots from outside the box.

Replays show it’s perfectly placed and set to potentially go into the bottom-right corner, but Nathan Ake got a foot to it. The ball looped up dangerously and City hearts were in mouths for a second but it fizzed narrowly high and wide.

Seconds later, Mbappe is played the ball in a pocket of space on the left side the penalty area, very decent opening, but his first-time right-footed finish is ballooned over the crossbar.

Carlo Ancelotti is not happy with that, in his utterly undemonstrative kind of way. The kind of miss that would see Pep Guardiola fall to his knees and beseech the old gods and the new with some dramatic hand gestures.
