The Mets reportedly expect Pete Alonso to sign elsewhere after he rejected the team’s offer of a three-year contract in the neighborhood of $70 million with opt-outs, according to Joel Sherman. That reporting was corroborated by Will Sammon, and both pieces mention that the Mets don’t expect to sign Alonso.
Yesterday, the team agreed to a one-year deal with Jesse Winker, who will presumably get the majority of reps at designated hitter for the Mets this year as the long side of a platoon at that position. And with no further additions in the infield, Mark Vientos seems destined to move to first base, opening up third base for internal candidates like Brett Baty, Ronny Mauricio, or Luisangel Acuña.
The reporting from Sherman, Sammon, and others all suggests that the Mets intend to spend more heavily on their bullpen in the absence of an Alonso deal. And Buster Olney suggested that the team’s dream scenario would be landing first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. The asking price for such a trade, however, is said to be very high.
