A new Barbie doll was released Thursday to honor the late Detroit-raised R&B singer Aaliyah on what would have been her 46th birthday.
The doll wears an outfit inspired by Aaliyah’s “One in a Million” music video look and is part of the Barbie Music Series.
“To celebrate Aaliyah’s birthday, Barbie pays homage to the legendary American R&B singer, actress, and model with our latest Music Series doll,” Mattel Creations said on its website. “Aaliyah’s smooth vocals and innovative sound helped shape ’90s R&B, and her influence on music and fashion continues to be felt today. Our tribute to “Babygirl’s” life and sound will take any collection to the top of the charts.”
It was made available for $55 at midnight and was only going to be available to purchase for one day for Barbie Club 59 members but, it quickly sold out.
Mattel Creations said the doll would also be available at participating Target locations during that period, and at Target.com, but preorders on Target’s website are also sold out.
Many fans also took to social media to discuss how quickly the doll sold out and questioned if there would be a restock.
Aaliyah was born in Brooklyn, but raised in Detroit. She died in 2001 at the age of 22 in a plane crash in the Bahamas, along with eight other people. They were in the Bahamas filming her “Rock the Boat” music video.
