During Microsoft’s Xbox Developer Direct, the mystery game of the show was Ninja Gaiden 4. The franchise has been dormant for a decade, but it’s coming back with a new entry in the series set to release this fall.
Team Ninja teamed up with Platinum Games, makers of Bayonetta and Nier Automata, to develop Ninja Gaiden 4. The game is a sequel to 2012’s Ninja Gaiden 3 but will feature a new protagonist. It will also keep with the same bloody, quick-action gameplay that the series is known for.
In Ninja Gaiden 4, players will step into the role of a new Ninja hero, Yakumo. The Dark Dragon has returned and ruined the city of Tokyo and it’s Yakumo who must take down the hordes of enemies and even face off against the former hero of the franchise, Ryu Hayabusa. The developers at Team Ninja say the new entry is going to retain the difficulty the franchise is known for, but the game will still be approachable for new players.
The Ninja Gaiden franchise started back in 1988 with the release of the first Ninja Gaiden game in arcades, which then came to the NES and became one of the console’s most prominent series. In 2004, the Ninja Gaiden series received a reboot on the Xbox, which continued through Ninja Gaiden 3, which was released in 2014.
Along with the news of a new Ninja Gaiden game, Team Ninja also revealed that a remaster of 2008’s Ninja Gaiden 2 Black had been developed in secret to keep players entertained until the release of Ninja Gaiden 4. The new version of the game is out now and is available on Xbox Game Pass.
Ninja Gaiden 4 will be released on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series consoles in the fall. It will also be available on Xbox Game Pass.
