It’s been four long years since “drivers license” dropped, and the supposed feud between pop stars Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter subsequently entered the public imagination. But, tonight, those rumors may finally be put to rest, if the duo’s sweet interaction at the 2025 Grammys is any indication.
For the uninitiated, here’s a little refresher: in 2021, Rodrigo released “drivers license,” a song about an ex moving on with an unnamed “blonde girl.” Listeners speculated that the ex in question was Rodrigo’s Disney Channel costar, Joshua Bassett, while the “blonde girl” referred to Sabrina Carpenter. Chaos ensued, and a divide grew between fans who devoted themselves to either Team Olivia or Team Sabrina.
Over the years, Rodrigo and Carpenter have commented on the beef rumors. “I put [“drivers license”] out not knowing that it would get that reaction, so it was really strange [when] it did. I just remember [everyone being] so weird and speculative about stuff they had no idea about,” Rodrigo told Variety in 2021. “I don’t really subscribe to hating other women because of boys. I think that’s so stupid, and I really resent that narrative that was being tossed around.”
Carpenter has also previously refuted that her 2021 single, “Skin,” was a diss track towards Rodrigo. “I wasn’t bothered by a few lines in a (magnificent) song and wrote a diss track about it,” she wrote on Instagram at the time, seemingly referring to the “blonde” lyric in “drivers license.” “The song isn’t calling out one single person. Some lines address a specific situation, [and others] address plenty of other experiences I’ve had this past year.”
At last, the two have publicly reunited at the 67th annual Grammy Awards ceremony, which is taking place tonight at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. During the commercial break, Rodrigo appeared to walk over to Carpenter’s table, where the two (now) Grammy winners could be seen chatting closely together.
Tonight, Carpenter earned her first-ever Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance. In total, she has been nominated in six categories, including Album of the Year and Song of the Year. She also delivered her first-ever performance on the Grammy stage, where she nailed a medley of “Espresso” and “Please, Please, Please.”
Meanwhile, Rodrigo was nominated in the category of Best Song Written for Visual Media. She also introduced Chappell Roan prior to the singer’s debut performance.
