Oscar Nominations Include L.A. Magazine Cover Stars Colman Domingo and Sebastian Stan

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its 97th Oscar nominations Thursday morning, with comedians Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott serving as presenters. Among the nominees were L.A. Magazine cover subjects Colman Domingo, recognized for his work in “Sing Sing,” and Sebastian Stan, who received multiple nominations for his portrayal of Donald Trump in “The Apprentice.”

James Mangold’s “A Complete Unknown” emerged as a leading contender with eight nominations. While Timothée Chalamet’s portrayal of Bob Dylan anchors the film, Monica Barbaro’s performance as Joan Baez—complete with remarkable vocal work—earned her a surprise nomination for Actress in a Supporting Role.

Despite garnering nominations in three other categories, A24’s “Sing Sing” missed out on a Best Picture nod. The production company saw most of its Academy attention focused on “The Brutalist,” even as their other releases achieved critical success throughout the year.

In a notable oversight, Luca Guadagnino’s 2024 blockbuster “Challengers” received no nominations. The snub was particularly surprising in the Best Score category, where Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s widely praised original compositions for the sports-driven love triangle went unrecognized.

Emilia Pérez” led the pack with 13 nominations, setting up competitive races against fellow contenders including “Wicked,” “The Brutalist,” “The Substance,” “Conclave,” and “Anora.”
