Soccer Superstar Neymar May Be Joining The Chicago Fire

Just when I thought the city of Chicago couldn’t get any better, reports emerged confirming that Neymar and his team are in talks with the Chicago Fire. A sentence I never imagined I’d write in my entire life. Neymar, one of the most prolific footballers of all time, potentially joining the Chicago Fire? It feels surreal. This wouldn’t be the first time a global superstar has joined the MLS. Over the years, the league has attracted big names like David Beckham, Zlatan Ibrahimović, and, more recently, Lionel Messi. However, let’s be honest—most of these legends come to the MLS in the twilight of their careers, often seeking a lucrative final chapter before retirement. But Neymar? Even at the end of his career would be electrifying.

Why Chicago, though, and not a more glamorous destination like Miami? After all, Miami has become synonymous with star power, especially with Messi now playing for Inter Miami. The answer lies in MLS rules. Miami already has three designated players, which means they’re maxed out on their ability to offer high salaries to marquee players. On top of that, the Chicago Fire hold Neymar’s MLS “discovery rights.” For those unfamiliar, discovery rights are a stupid mechanism that gives teams the first opportunity to negotiate with specific players. While the term itself sounds odd—after all, everyone already knows who Neymar is—it’s a key part of league regulations. These rights grant Chicago an exclusive chance to pursue Neymar, and the thought of him joining the Fire is thrilling.

As someone who has spent time in both South Florida and Chicago, this news strikes a personal chord. If Neymar joins Chicago and we get a Messi vs. Neymar showdown in the MLS, I’d be living through my own soccer version of a house divided. Who would I root for? Honestly, I have no idea—but does it even matter? The sheer spectacle of these two icons facing off on American soil would be more than enough for any soccer fan. I can already picture the electric atmosphere: packed stadiums, deafening cheers, and ticket prices that would likely soar through the roof. And you know what? I don’t care how much those tickets cost—I’d be there.

Of course, bringing Neymar to Chicago is easier said than done. The financial aspect presents a daunting challenge. Neymar is reportedly earning $100 million a year in Saudi Arabia, while the Fire can offer, at best, a salary of around $20 million. It’s a significant gap, one that will require creative solutions if this deal is to happen. Perhaps sponsorship deals, revenue-sharing agreements, or other incentives could sweeten the pot and make the move appealing to Neymar.

Regardless of the hurdles, the mere possibility of Neymar joining the Chicago Fire has me fired up and I would love nothing more than to see the game of soccer grow in the city I live in.
