01.20.25 (PRESS STATEMENT) – Today, long-time reproductive rights activist and former president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America Cecile Richards passed away. The Center for Reproductive Rights issued a statement honoring her legacy and leadership in the reproductive rights movement.
Statement from Nancy Northup, President and CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights:
“Cecile Richards was an indefatigable force in the reproductive rights movement. She fought with equal parts tenacity and grace, even under the most grueling of circumstances. She didn’t just believe in the power of a life in public service. She embraced it proudly and fearlessly, whether standing toe-to-toe with hostile opponents or ensuring dignity and a full range of services to everyone who walked through Planned Parenthood’s doors. As Cecile wrote in her 2018 book Make Trouble, “We get only what we’re willing to fight for.”
Working alongside Cecile was a lesson in fortitude and grit I’ll forever cherish. Losing her on Day 1 of an administration that threatens the reproductive health and freedoms she spent her life defending is a pointed reminder that we must carry on the fight, no matter what.
I offer my deepest condolences to Cecile’s family and loved ones, and to all of us whose lives she transformed through her stalwart activism.”
