As long as companies have hyped, exclusive products being released on special days like Black Friday, there’s always been a demand to get these products for the fact that they are so exclusive. Over the years you’ve seen everything from Cabbage Patch Dolls, to Beanie Babies, and within the last few decades, Pokémon cards become one of the most sought-after collectibles.
Ever since the pandemic, there has been a serious problem that the Pokémon community has been facing and that is with scalpers.
People will go to a store like Walmart or Target when they first open and buy all the product which is going for a higher rate than the market price online, and then turn around and sell that product for a profit.
This leaves people who really want to open these cards Without any opportunity to do so and forces them to buy overpriced product just because of the hype that’s around it. That’s exactly what’s happening. Today in Michigan, official stores can sell the new Pokémon set Prismatic Evolutions.
The set features the chance to pull a card that recently sold on eBay for $18,000, and since pre-sales, the prices of these products have tripled and possibly quadrupled. Unfortunately, many stores don’t put a limit to how many you can buy there, so it has led to certain situations of people flooding the store at opening and taking all the products for themselves so that they can make a profit.
Here’s a small clip of the madness that went down just a few years ago, and still happens today.
and another where things got physical:
As a Yugioh player, I know how frustrating it is to just want to buy a product, or play the game, but can’t because the secondary market scalps these cards or products and inflates the price.
But getting into fights over cards? Putting someone in a waist lock over shiny cardboard? Don’t be that man.
