Warriors Star Getting Crushed For Response To Luka Doncic Trade

From fans on social media to sports talk shows to the biggest stars in the NBA, takes about the stunning Luka DoncicAnthony Davis trade have been flying since the news broke Saturday night.

Doncic was acquired by the Los Angeles Lakers, along with Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris. The Dallas Mavericks received Davis, Max Christie and a 2029 first-round draft pick in the three-team trade that also included the Utah Jazz.

Most reactions focused on the questionable move by the Mavericks or the future of the Lakers, but none drew the immediate backlash that Golden State Warriors guard Dennis Schroder faced after he referred to the NBA as “modern slavery” on Tuesday.

“It’s modern slavery at the end of the day,” Schroder told NBC Sports Bay Area. “Everybody can decide where you’re going, even if you have a contract.”

Schroder has been traded five times and made over $100 million in salary in his 12 NBA seasons. His quote was referring to front offices like the one in Dallas, which traded Doncic without his knowledge.

“At the end of the day if they say, ‘You’re not coming to work tomorrow, you’re going over there,’ they can decide that,” he added. “They got to change that a little bit.”

The response to his quote was swift and near-unanimous from fans who claimed the German-born journeyman was out of touch and “ignorant.”

“Modern slavery pays better than 99% of jobs then…” responded one fan.

“Step away from the microphone,” begged a reply.

“Sigh,” wrote a frustrated user on X. “As a reminder to all pro athletes, modern slavery actually exists and it looks nothing like your life or career.”

In good humor, one user summed up the irony in the words of the Warriors guard: “And that’s how you get yourself traded before the end of the trade deadline.”
