2. He has a twin brother

The NBA notably has multiple sets of twins represented across various rosters. With their acquisition of Martin, the Mavericks will maintain an interesting trend on their roster.

Martin has previously played alongside his twin brother, Cody. The Martin brothers were on the same roster for a large portion of their lives, entering the NBA together in 2019 with the Charlotte Hornets. While Cody has played his entire professional career in Charlotte (with a brief stint in Greensboro), Caleb moved on and became a key weapon for some of the Eastern Conference’s top teams.

Prior to their latest trade moves, the Mavericks had Markieff Morris on their roster. He and his brother, Marcus, have built a reputation as tough defenders in the league.

3. He was almost Eastern Conference Finals MVP once

Although he’s been in the league for almost six years, Caleb Martin made himself a well-known figure to NBA fans during the 2023 playoffs. He was pivotal in helping the Miami Heat reach the NBA Finals as the East’s eighth seed, taking down Boston in a seven-game Eastern Conference Finals battle.

Caleb Martin averaged 19.3 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists throughout the East Finals, taking over Game 7 with a 26-point outing that included 10 boards and three assists. He was nearly named Eastern Conference Finals MVP, earning four of nine votes for the award that went to Jimmy Butler.

4. Look away, UT fans

We’ve already mentioned Caleb and Cody Martin played together for most of their lives. After originally starting their collegiate careers at NC State, the brothers transferred to Nevada in 2017 and became key pieces for then-Wolfpack coach Eric Musselman.

Texas Longhorns fans may remember the Martins from a 2018 NCAA Tournament matchup between UT and Nevada. The Longhorns kept things close throughout the matchup, but had no answers for the Martin brothers in overtime. Caleb Martin finished Nevada’s 87-83 first-round win over Texas with 18 points, while Cody posted 15.

5. Finished high school career with a powerhouse program

After spending three seasons at Davie County High School in North Carolina, Caleb and his brother Cody finished their high school stint at basketball powerhouse Oak Hill Academy.

The Virginia-based private school has helped boost many NBA standouts. Notable alumni include Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, Jerry Stackhouse and Rod Strickland. Former Mavericks guard Rajon Rondo also played for the program.
