My Xavier vs St. John’s College Basketball Betting Preview
Xavier had a fantastic week last week, pulling out three straight wins over DePaul, Villanova and Marquette (on the road) to crawl back to 4-4 in conference play.
But I wonder if that success is sustainable heading on the road again against Rick Pitino’s Johnnies, who have soared to the top of the Big East standings at 7-1 after five straight wins — including a 10-point road victory at Xavier.
In that matchup, the Red Storm owned the boards, winning the rebounding battle 50-30, which included 20 offensive rebounds that led to 22 second-chance points. They also won the turnover battle 12-8 and generated 14 fast-break points.
So, while the Johnnies didn’t shoot well (49% from 2, 13% from 3) and were mostly less efficient than Xavier, they won the shot-volume battle by 21, and that’s an impossible margin to overcome.
The schematic matchup almost doesn’t matter when you get out-athlete’d by that much, as the Red Storm jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.
It’s tough to see the Musketeers flipping the script in the shot-volume battle, especially with the rematch coming in Jamaica. That’s especially true in a letdown spot after pulling off a killer outright road win as a double-digit ‘dog.
Our Action PRO Model projects the Red Storm as an 8.5-point home favorite on Wednesday, so I think there’s some value on St. John’s laying seven or fewer.
